Elton John’s music output since the turn of the century has been remarkably good for someone who spent the previous two decades mostly churning out lazy drivel, and The Union is his best of the bunch, helped by the songwriting and warm crackly vocals of the great Leon Russell (and Brian Wilson and Neil Young), as well the lyrical Americana that served him so well back on Tumbleweed Connection.
